MSR Classics has produced a musical 'Dagwood Sandwich' with familiar and little known fillings. For a start there's Felix Draeseke (1835-1913) who wrote eight operas and stage works, four symphonies, and a body of vocal and chamber music. He attended Leipzig Conservatory and in 1856, following an early performance of Wagner's Lohengrin, was drawn (until 1861) to the Liszt / Wagner school centered around Franz Liszt at Weimar.
Note that Wagner, at that time Royal Saxon Court Conductor, had been inspired by the revolutionary spirit since 1848. He wrote passionate articles in the Volksblätter inciting people to revolt...
