Puccini's 'La fanciulla del west' at the movies impresses MARIA NOCKIN
On 8 January 2011, the Metropolitan Opera commemorated the one-hundredth anniversary of the première of Puccini's La fanciulla del west ('The Girl of the Golden West') with an HD transmission of the opera to cinemas all across the world. Its first performance on 10 December 1910 starred Emmy Destinn as Minnie, Enrico Caruso as Dick Johnson and Pasquale Amato as Jack Rance. The conductor was Arturo Toscanini. This was the Metropolitan's first world première and it was a major success. The next year Fanciulla was seen at Covent Garden in London, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires...
