The Bach concerto I have played most recently is that for two keyboards in C minor: not indeed the well-known work that may have originated in a concerto for oboe and violin, but the arrangement Bach made, either for the entertainment of his gifted children or the instruction of the students belonging to the Leipzig 'Collegium Musicum', of the two-violin concerto on this CD. Any violinist would immediately cry 'sacrilege'; and I have to admit that the incomparable Largo sounds better on strings. But Bach is ready to arrange almost anything into anything, so that a prelude for solo violin may introduce a church cantata when transcribed for organ and large orchestra...
