Striking up a close musical friendship with Dr Jefferson Campbell, well known bassoon soloist and faculty member at the University of Minnesota Duluth, has been such an inspiration to thirty-eight-year old New York composer Justin Rubin that he was able, in 2005, to emerge from what he describes as a 'creative endpoint' into prolific production -- and in particular, prolific bassoon production.
There is no doubt that the performances on this disc are of a very high quality, and the inventive partnerships for the solo instrument prove intriguing and comfortably accessible. The combination of bassoon and marimba (Gene Koshinski) is very effective, and the little waltz -- third of four Bagatelles -- is an unusual piece...
