In a convent in the lovely Tuscan countryside, near Lucca (Giacomo Puccini's birthplace) is Montegral. As a matter of fact, if you go there you'll meet neither Amfortas nor Gurnemanz, but you will meet young musicians studying Wagnerian roles as well as those of other composers, at the Accademia di Montegral.
The academy was established some twenty three years ago by Gustav Kuhn (a very well-known Austrian conductor who specialized in Wagner and Strauss, but who doesn't disdain Mozart or Verdi). Kuhn also loves Italy, where he has been artistic director of the Rome Opera House, the Sferisterio Festival and a star of the Rossini Opera Festival and of the San Carlo Theatre in Naples. The academy is financed by a local savings and loans association, and by a number of Austrian banks and firms as well as by the Lucca Municipal and Provincial authorities...
