John Lanchbery
The British-born arranger, ballet composer and conductor John Lanchbery died in Melbourne on 27 February 2003 aged 79. Born in London on 15 May 1923, Lanchbery studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music and won the Henry Smart scholarship. His fifty-five year career included work for BBC TV, Sadler's Wells, The Royal Ballet, Australian Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, but he is best known for his successful collaboration with Frederick Ashton on Hérold's La Fille mal gardée.
