Wagner ban lifted
A ban on performances of the music of Richard Wagner in Israel came to an end on 27 October 2000, when holocaust survivor Medi Rohan conducted the Israel Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Siegfried Idyll in Israel. Although Wagner died long before Hitler and the Holocaust, his music came to symbolise the Nazis. Legal precedent in Israel appears to indicate that freedom of expression is becoming increasingly important. A single protest, seconds before the music began, was dealt with quickly, and the music was otherwise not interrupted.
