Bayreuth successor?
In June 2000 the Bayreuth Foundation failed to decide who would replace Richard Wagner's grandson Wolfgang as leader of the 125 year old Bayreuth Festival. The three applicants for the job - Eva Wagner-Pasquier, Gudrun Wagner and Nike Wagner - are all descendants of Richard. The official title of the job is 'director for life', and the current incumbant Wolfgang, known for his stubbornness, has vowed to continue until he dies, unless the foundation offer the job to his wife Gudrun. Unfortunately, they appear to prefer Eva Wagner-Pasquier. Meanwhile, general opinion appears to be that 81 year-old Wolfgang has run out of ideas, and that his vision for the Festival's future has become somewhat blurred, and Wolfgang admits that he should hand over control to someone new.
