The distinguished English music critic Neville Cardus was born 2 April 1889. His writings for the Manchester Guardian from 1927 to 1940 were astute and became popular. He wrote for the Sydney Morning Herald during the War and eventually returned to The Guardian in 1951. His lifelong passion for cricket was equally well known, and books covering his various interests were published. He died on 27 February 1975.
