This second volume of orchestral works by Debussy brings together some intriguing orchestrations of his piano music which sound quite awesome in their new guise. Jun Märkl is a sympathetic advocate of these radical newly minted works and he brings out the mystical nature of Pelléas in marvelous fashion.
Listen -- Debussy, arranged Constant: Pelléas et Mélisande -- Symphonie
(track 1, 10:07-11:58) © 2008 Naxos Rights International Ltd
Nocturnes is one of the three major works by the composer and if Märkl is not Monteux or Munch who remain the top recommendations for this composition then his version is certainly in the top ten for its luscious string lines and sensuous sound.
Listen -- Debussy: Sirènes (Nocturnes)
(track 5, 1:00-2:47) © 2008 Naxos Rights International Ltd
Berceuse héroïque and Trois Etudes are also given excellent interpretations with the latter in a sublime orchestration by Michael Jarrell which really brings these pieces to life. With copious notes and crystal clear recordings, this disc is a winner through and through.
Listen -- Debussy: Pour les accords (Trois Etudes)
