On Tuesday 6 May 2008, San Diego Opera revived its 2004 production of Les Pêcheurs de Perles with its luscious costumes and colourful decor by British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes. Her original felt pen strokes are preserved in the actual sets and the effect is unique. Ron Vodicka's subtly harmonized lighting added to the exotic atmosphere, while Andrew Sinclair's well-conceived direction enabled the singers to portray their roles with conviction and visual directness.

Charles Castronovo was a virile, bare-chested Nadir who sang with opulent tones and made the most of a difficult role. One-time Operalia finalist, Malcolm Mackenzie made a splendid Zurga. His singing was robust and secure while his proficient acting helped make up for some of the flaws in the libretto.
