An octave can be divided into 1200 cents. In each of this work's twelve duets the scale of the microtonal keyboard is shifted anywhere from four to 48 cents. Sound is further varied through patches that emulate other instruments. The smallest retuning is probably not audibly different to most people.

However, as the separation from the usual piano tuning becomes ever more distant, the music becomes more unsettling.
