From this year, when Mike Brewer does workshops for Youth and Music, he takes a group of these young leaders along with him. This has a two-fold benefit, the young leaders provide role models for the young people attending the workshop and the young leaders gain skills when helping with the workshops.
At the NYC vacation courses, the section leaders and assistant section leaders are responsible for supervising the learning of all the music. All the studying of notes is done within sections, before the choir rehearses with the conductor. This is done in small groups, led by the young people themselves. Within these groups they must sing to each other; this helps develop individual responsibility as all have to be able to sing on their own in the small group.

This system not only helps to develop leadership, but makes rehearsals more efficient; note learning is done outside the main rehearsal and if there are any problems the conductor arranges with the section leader for the problems to be corrected at the next section rehearsal.
