<<< << -- 3 -- Paul Sarcich A UNIQUE SOUND

Two Scarlatti Concerti Grossi are presented, the contrapuntal opening of No 2 in particular
[listen -- track 18, 0:01-0:45]
allowing each instrumentalist to shine. Minuets can often sound flat-footed, but this one
[listen -- track 20, 1:39-2:21]
flows without effort.
This disc shows every evidence of careful thought and preparation, as to arrangements, sound, and every aspect of the playing -- which however is never stiff or academic. The recording is clear and bright but not lacking in warmth, the right amount of bloom around the sound and well-balanced between saxes and organ. Very few pad or key noises intrude even with the restrained dynamic levels. For sax lovers this will be a delight, but it should also win over a few who might turn their noses up at the thought -- just be prepared to accept quality with a very large Q.
