The 21 December performance of La bohème was staged by former tenor, Carroll Freeman, who sang Don Ottavio in Peter Sellars' televised Don Giovanni. Since then, he has directed a number of works for regional opera companies. His was an energetic group of Bohemians. They fought, danced and generally looked like they were having a wonderful time, all the while singing Puccini's gorgeous score. Only occasionally did the direction seem to overwhelm the sublety of the piece, as in the thrusting of fists between Benoit's legs to imply his supposed virility.
