Each of Catherine Zuber's detailed costumes evoked the spirit of the piece and helped the singer ground his or her interpretation. Marie's garb was particularly attractive and told a great deal about her priorities. The set by Robert Brill resembled a stick-built amphitheater that rotated on a turntable. It would have been strikingly effective if it had moved silently. Unfortunately, it creaked during the interludes that join the opera's numerous scenes and distracted the audience from the intriguing videos designed by Dustin O'Neill.
