<< -- 5 -- Maria Nockin A VERY UNUSUAL EVENING

Countertenor David Daniels was an authoritative Ottone who phrased artfully and Christine Brandes, who had sung the night before, portrayed Drusilla with vocal acumen. Nicholas Phan was vocally accomplished and visually inventive in the four parts of The First Soldier, Seneca's Second Friend, Lucano and The First Consul. Another tenor, Daniel Montenegro, was a masterful Second Soldier, Liberto and Second Consul. Levi Hernandez, baritone, and Benjamin von Atrops, bass, proved their worth as Mercury, The First tribune, The Third Friend of Seneca, Littore and The Second Tribune.

It was a very unusual evening at Los Angeles Opera that both entertained and educated the sold out audience. Let's hope that the company will see fit to perform early music more often.
