<< -- 4 -- Robert Anderson MUCH RESONANCE
England, conspicuously absent from the courageous Barenboim-Said venture, did at
least provide the encore for the Ramallah concert; nor can 'Nimrod', Elgar's matchless
tribute to the possibilities of friendship, ever have been more appropriately played.
I welcome the fact that Elgar's glorious music could still be heard as a fleet of
Israeli cars, wailing their way towards the Wall with screaming sirens, carried the
young Jews back to what has become the largest ghetto in their history
[watch and listen -- DVD2 chapter 15, 107:20-110:19].
Who can say what will be the future of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra? The Knesset
has made it unlikely that its next concert will be in pulverised Lebanon.
