On a beautiful red and black background there were renaissance style figures that looked as though they came from paintings. These images were especially powerful under Duane Schuler's dramatic lighting. Tim Goodchild's costumes were mostly plain and black except for the rich looking, trailing capes worn by Philip and Elizabeth at the Auto da Fe.

As Don Carlo, Salvatore Licitra lived up to the high expectations that many opera goers have had for him over the last few years. His acting was passionate and his legato smooth as he poured out an expanse of surging sound.
