<< -- 4 -- Robert Anderson A VIRTUOSO PERFORMANCE

Giselle, now resurrected as a Wili, takes extreme measures to save Albrecht, floating
across the stage as if practising for a part in Peter Pan
[watch and listen -- chapter 30, 78:35-79:42].
Once they have disposed of Hilarion, the Wilis catch sight of Albrecht too. Giselle advises
that only clinging to a crucifix can save him. Her dancing rightly bewitches him so that he
abandons the crucifix and is compelled to an exciting display of skill such as totally
exhausts him and should be the signal for a second Wili triumph
[watch and listen -- chapter 35, 95:22-96:15].
But the village clock strikes four, the Wilis are unmagicked by the coming dawn and
Albrecht survives. He cannot live happily ever after with Giselle, as she is dead; one hopes
he returns to Bathilde, that she forbids dancing of any sort, and that he avoids that particular
part of the wood during the hours of Wili danger.
