Somewhat Controversial
'Carmen' in Santa Fe, reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN
On 7 August 2006, Santa Fe Opera presented Georges Bizet's opera Carmen in an updated setting of the original version. Much of the spoken dialogue was retained and, as a result, spectators had more than the usual amount of information presented to them by the opera house's English and Spanish titles.

Bizet composed the work at a time when tastes were changing. Realism in art was becoming popular and the management of the Paris Opéra-Comique was looking to bring in new audiences. Before the première of Carmen, patrons were warned that this piece was not the usual family-oriented fare.
