<< -- 3 -- Anna Franco ELOQUENT INSIGHTS

On a more abstract level, Hurwitz offers eloquent insights into the achievements of Haydn: 'The most outstanding quality of his early works is their confidence and maturity, while that of his later work is their ongoing originality and youthfulness.' (page 102)
The book concludes with a final chapter of questions and answers, four appendices listing Haydn's works by genre: symphonies, string quartets, piano trios, and piano sonatas, with some miscellaneous keyboard pieces, and, finally, a listing for the two accompanying CDs. I would recommend this book to music lovers especially interested in learning more about Haydn's works and also to those generally interested in the classical era.
David Hurwitz is founder of Classicstoday.com, a daily classical music review website, and the Classical Internet Awards. Exploring Haydn is No 6 in the Unlocking the Masters Series from Amadeus Press, which includes books on Wagner, Mahler, Dvorák and Mozart.
