Many of Wilson's pieces have their inspiration in external sources, particularly the visual arts. Winter's Edge is based on the life of St Paul and his subsequent quartets have taken their inspiration from the work of Giacometti and Klee. His piano trio, Seven Last Words, is inspired by the Bible but, being instrumental, Wilson wanted to make the themes and their emotional contour more universal.

He finds that expressing himself in music helps him solidify his ideas, 'ideas about life and death, about living, the spirit, all sorts of things.' Though he writes pieces with no obvious source of inspiration, he is inclined to view such works as just another way of expressing himself, 'albeit in a more subtle and possibly obtuse way'.
