If the richly romantic music of Frank Bridge is still unfamiliar territory, this CD should leave no doubt in any listener's mind that he was a composer of intensity with an outstanding gift for succinct musical argument, beautifully made single-movement structures and a genius for colourful orchestration. He was a viola player for a time with the Joachim Quartet and later the English String Quartet, but increasingly during his early professional life worked as a conductor, principally with opera, but was noted for an ability to take on difficult scores at short notice. Bridge frequently deputized for Henry Wood at Promenade Concerts and spent part of 1923 in the USA conducting much of his own music with the symphony orchestras of Boston, Cleveland, Detroit and New York. But he drew inspiration from his beloved Sussex coastal area were he was born and where in 1941 he died at the age of 62.
