<< -- 3 -- John Bell Young APPROPRIATE ARDENCY
Her Debussy
[listen -- track 1, 1:00-2:15],
whose songs she intones with appropriate ardency, wants
for the specificity of affect that their greatest interpreters, such as Pierre Bernac
or Claire Croiza, bring to them. One longs in her readings for something more
than an unblemished realization, correctly interpreted, and for a certain
wistful ambiguity that gives emphasis to the music's implicit anxieties.
Even so, Ms Banse manages to nimbly set forth the languorous shifts of mood
from light to dark in a manner that is at once admirably understated and
discretely sotto voce.
In Andràs Schiff, whose rhythmically vibrant and intelligent, insightful
playing enhances the musical experience, Ms Banse has found an ideal
collaborator.
