Heinrich Biber was the Paganini of the seventeenth century. The alternate
tunings and frequent double stops of his Mystery Sonatas remain a
challenge for modern violinists. The Sonatae tam aris, quam aulis servientes
(Sonatas as much for the altar as for the table) are less demanding, but
still require substantial skill. Valveless trumpets are even asked to navigate
a minor key. The Parley of Instruments sails through all obstacles.
