Heinrich Biber was the Paganini of the seventeenth century. The alternate tunings and frequent double stops of his Mystery Sonatas remain a challenge for modern violinists. The Sonatae tam aris, quam aulis servientes (Sonatas as much for the altar as for the table) are less demanding, but still require substantial skill.
