<< -- 3 -- Robert Anderson IDEAS IN ABUNDANCE

A sequence on Jesu, meine Freude beautifully exemplifies Bach's
teaching. In his Clavierübung it was Krebs's way to treat the
chorales in three sections : first a 'praeambulum' hinting at the mood of
the tune and its contour; second a chorale prelude; and third the chorale
itself. The Praeambulum is in this case an appropriately joyous affair
[listen -- track 18, 0:00-0:44]. It was Bach's practice
to introduce his students to fugal writing by stipulating at first only
two parts. By the time Krebs came to write his fugue in A minor, he was
complete master of four parts or more, and could devise an impressive structure
with exemplary rigour and freedom. The conclusion makes an impressive peroration
and gives Kitchen every chance to display his virtuosity [listen
-- track 21, 2:35-3:38].
