<< -- 2 -- Trevor Hold A WELL-CHOSEN ANTHOLOGY
In vol 3, Gurney, Warlock and Quilter are given equal and fair division
of the modest 59-minute cake. Gurney ranges from his best ('I will
go with my father a-ploughing' [listen -- volume
3 track 3, 1:28-2:35]) to his less than good ('Snow'/'Ploughman
singing'); Quilter from the familiar ('Dream valley' / 'Now
sleeps the crimson petal') to the less known but equally fine ('Amaryllis
at the fountain' / 'Autumn evening' [listen
-- volume 3 track 25, 0:56-1:48]); whilst Warlock is alternatively boisterens
('Roister Doister' / 'Captain Stratton's fancy')
and dolens ('Autumn twilight' / 'Take, O take those
lips away') and is capped by one of his finest achievements, the folk-inspired
Lillygay [listen -- volume 3 track 18, 0:00-1:10].
Sarah Leonard is joined by her brother Paul (vol 2) and Jonathan Veira
(vol 3). Veira is particularly good, and all three singers are in the safe
hands of Malcolm Martineau.
