<< -- 3 -- Bill Newman CELEBRATORY PARADE
Two hours later I rested at a disused farmhouse with barn and outhouses.
A few rotted carts and implements were strewn about, willy nilly. Could
this be it? The area above was dense forest with no discernible path, so
I turned back, having enjoyed the lofty view. Going in the other direction
to Monteluco you walk upwards again eventually reaching a densely tangled
arbour leading to a derelict mansion, partly hidden by vegetation. To gain
access you have to descend steep stone steps, fighting your way through
a mass of climbing roses and decide on your entry. Look in or out of the
crenelated windows and you can imagine yourself in the world of M R James
with ghostly apparitions resenting your occupation of their abode!
Continuing the path upwards you eventually leave woodland for a dual
carriageway, and ahead the radio/TV mast. I used the road back, preferring
walking to the autobus.
