RODERIC DUNNETT samples a Garsington speciality

The other star of Garsington's season was Marco Gandini's all-Italian
staging team, including Edoardo Sanchi's ingenious bricked-up Garsington
extension, in La Gazzetta ('The Newspaper Advert'), a needlessly
dumped Rossini gem, to a libretto by Giuseppe Palomba based on Goldoni's
Il matrimonio concorso (1763). Dating from l816, midway between the
Barbiere and Cenerentola, one of his best periods, given new
life by Fabrizio Scipioni's recent Pesaro performing edition and conducted
with Rossinian verve and not a little insight by Corrado Rovaris (Rovaris
trained at the Verdi Conservatoire in Milan, is already much in demand in
his native Italy, and proved a brilliant find).
