NEW TWISTS
MALCOLM MILLER listens to American pianist John Robilette
The American pianist John Robilette is a musician of engaging individuality,
with a tellingly attractive piano tone and idiosyncratic interpretative
approach. While his pianistic influences derive from his early training
in Europe with former assistants to Cortot and Schnabel, he also displays
musical entrepreneurship. He has commissioned numerous piano works from
leading American composer such as Lukas Foss and George Perle and devised
the state-sponsored 'Artistic Ambassadorial Program' to promote
American musicians around the world. It was this blend of intriguing musical
idiosyncrasy and outlook that captivated the somewhat slender yet enthusiastic
audience at his recital at London's St John's Smith Square on 10 June
2001.
