This year Gil Shohat's opera Alpha and Omega was immensely successful and we had to present it on an extra night -- an unusual occurrence for a new work! And we have commissioned a new opera for 2003/4 from Josef Bardanashvili, the Georgian-born Israeli who has recently received many premières and prizes.

MM -- Apart from the commissioning of new Israeli works, does your programming have a particular 'Jewish' orientation'?

HM -- No: we feel Opera is an international art form; however we did produce Halevy's La Juive which ran as a sell-out for thirteen nights -- where would this have happened elsewhere? And Weill's Eternal Road, a co-production which came via New York and Europe for the Weill Centenary, was also received very well.
