Two Crusader-era operas, Schubert's Fierrabras and Schumann's
Genoveva, received slightly stolid stagings from Aidan Lang at Buxton
(in Derbyshire) and Garsington (near Oxford) respectively. Yet the nuggets
thrown up by the music -- in Susannah Glanville's contribution to the latter
stages of Genoveva (also staged by Opera North this autumn, and due
to be heard in concert performance at London's Royal Festival Hall on Friday
February 2nd) and especially in the gorgeously tuneful Fierrabras
-- amply justified these attempts at staging.
