<< -- 2 -- Basil Ramsey The born and stillborn
Of these two CDs, the contents of the first are mostly the work of real
composers treating the harp as a member of the family of instruments - Britten,
Hindemith, Roussel and Ginastera. This CD comes up fresh to reveal a voice
liberated from shoals of glissandi and Czerny-like scales and arpeggios
[listen - track 5, 1:00 - 1:50]. There is also
a C.P.E. Bach Sonata here, transcribed and sounding delightful with its
switch of instrument.
The other CD devotes itself to the music of Marcel Tournier, and is a
headache for me. His distinctive reputation as a composer, player and teacher
suggests that this music is of a supreme quality. I fail to see it. Certainly
he uses the instrument to the full extent of its capabilities, which may
have blinded my search for freshness.
