RENAISSANCE
The oboe d'amore revitalised
<< Continued from page 1
The recent pieces with piano for Jennifer Paull are on the second CD of
the group, generally balancing the requisites of idiomatic writing and musical
quality with a good average. For a start, the oboe d'amore has a delicate
nasal voice blended with a rich huskiness producing a sound to cut through
almost any orchestral colour with a vibrancy unlike others. Similar to the
oboe/cor anglais, of course, but enriched like honey in hot milk. These
composers have written for this special sound, which slices through the
piano colour with complete disdain. It therefore creates a slight tension
to ferment the mix, thus activating the combined sounds [listen
