1. Copland's centenary
Aaron Copland, the best-known, and in Leonard Bernstein's and my
view, simply the best of America's 'serious' composers, was
born, as befits a New World artist, in 1900, on the threshold of a new century,
and died in 1990. This year we celebrate the centenary of his birth: to
which celebration this new CD makes a contribution the more valuable because
it embraces chamber music that is less familiar to us than it ought to be.
All the pieces are good and each, chronologically speaking, is better than
the previous one.
