A
young fresh-voiced ensemble of six are responsible for this singular compilation
of sacred and secular songs intermingling in celebration of phases of the
Life-Force. It is also appropriate that the settings come from the 16th
and 17th centuries, resourcefully chosen to illuminate the mix of nationalistic
styles for setting Protestant texts, and those whose earthy music gave a
sparkling impetus to madrigals and chansons. [Listen
- track 20, 00:13 - 00:51.]
Having had an idea of demonstrating these musical styles, and selecting
a compulsive group of pieces for the purpose, it was a tough challenge for
the singers to perform with stylistic conviction, but they succeed in spirit
and as closely in ensemble and tuning as could be expected. Only occasionally
might there be a touch 'over the line' but it is rare, and an unusual juxtaposition
of pieces teaches us as it also widens our experience.
