Pianos and Pianists - Editor Ates Orga

This day in piano history

Under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, the fourth World Piano Competition took place in London, 19-29 April. Founded in 1986 by the Moscow-trained Russian/Lithuanian pianist and teacher Sulamita Aronovsky, the event attracted more than 600 enquiries and eighty applications. Of the forty-five candidates invited to submit unedited stereo video-tapes, twenty-four made it to the closing rounds. Each gave two solo recitals (Stages 1 & 2), with nine qualifying for the semi-final (Stage 3) and three for the Grand Final.
