William Pleeth
William Pleeth, one of Britains most celebrated and loved cellists,
died on April 6th 1999. He shunned the limelight of a soloist's career for
chamber music and teaching, and along the way as a pupil came Jacqueline
du Pre. One of his known favourite parts was as second cello in Schubert's
'Trout' Quintet, often with the Amadeus Quartet. He founded the Allegri
Quartet, but
will best be remembered by a legion of pupils, all of whom received enlightened
tuition from a rather special musician.
