This CD encompasses works by composers from Russia and Poland — two contemporaries whose lives and styles could not have been more different.
Born in St Petersburg in 1904, Dmitry Kabalevsky spent all his artistic life serving the dictum of the Communist Party. He was a man who did not want to risk his life and career by being himself, such as Shostakovich and Prokofiev among others, so he composed music that was tuneful and catchy, and this pleased his Soviet overlords who showered him with three Stalin prizes and four Orders of Lenin. To save his bacon he even went as far as throwing another composer under the bus...
