James Hamilton-Paterson's 'Sinfonia Eroica', highly recommended by GERALD FENECH
James Hamilton-Paterson begins his book by recalling the foundations of the development of classical music through sonata form, before delving into the biographical details of the early life of Ludwig van Beethoven, the ground-breaking composer of this symphony. He then explores the theme of Prometheus for which Beethoven wrote ballet music which in turn was re-used for one of the movements of the Eroica. In this same chapter he also deals with Beethoven's deafness which so profoundly affected the composer and which inspired the heartbreaking Heiligenstadt Testament...
