Johann Simon Mayr (1763-1845) remains famous as having been Donizetti's teacher and mentor, but he was indeed also one of the most innovative and industrious composers of his time. His output is prodigious, and the many works in these genres attest to his immense talent.
By the turn of the eighteenth century one of the sacred texts most being put to music was Jacopo da Todi's 'Stabat Mater', so it is no surprise that Mayr also caught the bug...
