At Moscow Conservatory Taneyev studied piano with Edward Langer and later Nikolai Rubinstein. He entered the theory class of Nikola Hubert and, most importantly, the composition class of Tchaikovsky. Upon graduating (1875) he became the first student in the Conservatory history to win the gold medal for both composition and performance (piano).
He was soloist in the Moscow premiere of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto (1875) and in the Russian premiere of the Second Piano Concerto...
