For music lovers in the West, the name of Leonid Sabaneyev means little, if anything, but delving into his life and career, one quickly discerns what an imprint he left on both the musical as well as on the academic aspects of Soviet society. Born in 1881, the young Leonid was educated at home by teachers from the Tsarevich Nikolay Lyceum. When he was sixteen, he was granted special permission to enter Moscow University, from where he went on to complete a doctorate in pure mathematics, and by 1918 he was a full professor.
