SOMEWHAT CONGESTED
Jonathan Scott plays the organ of Derby Cathedral, reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
Standing in for an indisposed Carleton Etherington, Jonathan Scott ended this year's series of Derby Cathedral Summer Organ Recitals with a dazzling display of virtuosity that nevertheless left one or two questions in the air (Derby, UK, 31 August 2016).
He included some of his own transcriptions, starting with the overture to Rossini's The Barber of Seville. The repeated notes in the main quick theme were cleanly articulated, but the sound overall tended to be somewhat congested, as though Scott was reaching for any bit of the instrument he could lay hands on, simply because it was there...
