Just spotted this and wanted to second my friend Jessica's feelings (equivocal) with regard to exams.

NOT MUCH IN PRAISE OF EXAMS

First, the pupil isn't normally given a choice. I consider it crucial to actually put it to the child (or adult, but they're generally more clued-in, frankly) :
