When one focuses on the sacred genre during the baroque era, it is surprising how many works were written highlighting the Passion of Our Lord. It is a false notion to assume that the pioneer of the Passion Oratorio was J S Bach. Indeed, passions in Italy before Bach's time are in fact more numerous than is generally thought, and many of these were composed for devotional use, particularly in the south of the country, where religion is more deeply rooted in the lives of the people.
