I was looking forward to reviewing this CD, as Mariss Jansons' other recordings and performances of Sibelius' Symphony No 2 have had mixed reviews. Here, partnered with the South German Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he has conducted since the mid 2000s, I could not fault the performances.
A magnificent performance of Finlandia, with the right amounts of mysteriousness, gravitas, sometimes menace, tenderness and grandeur, opens the disc. I like the conductor's approach, making full use of the music's silences and the endings and pickups to phrases...
