Haydn, Bartók and Dvorák from the Chilingirian Quartet, reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
Haydn's String Quartet in C, Op 54 No 2, is one of his most extraordinary, constantly subverting our expectations. The Chilingirian Quartet revelled in its sheer unpredictability (St John's Church, Buxton, 15 July 2016), from a playful, almost cheeky start, through the soulfulness of the second movement's improvisatory first violin solo, to its incomplete final cadence setting up expectations for the extraordinary third movement. The players started this in a subdued mood, perhaps in anticipation of its astonishing trio section, tense and anguished just where you'd expect the music to be at its most relaxed and carefree...
