Resonant Baritone

MIKE WHEELER describes
Josep-Ramon Olivé and Ben-San Lau's Buxton debut

Catalan baritone Josep-Ramon Olivé and Manchester-born pianist Ben-San Lau were the 2016 winners of Oxford Lieder Festival's Young Artists Platform Award. The combination of Olivé's rich, resonant baritone, and Lau's alert, responsive playing made for an impressive Buxton debut (Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton, UK, 11 July 2016).

Their opening Strauss group began with a big-boned, rhetorical account of 'Zueignung', before moving on to the second of three performances of 'Morgen' at this year's festival (following Gemma Lois Summerfield and Sebastian Whybrew, and with Sarah-Jane Brandon and Audrey Hyland still to come)...
